International Virtual Play-In

Back in April 2020, with many students faced with loss of access to a regular group violin class, the Musissho Co-Founder Chika Wie launched a non-profit initiative to present a fully-online play-in session for violinists through Zoom. Working together with her husband and Musissho Co-Founder Gene Wie to develop the technology setup and initially supported by several colleagues, the husband and wife team has moved forward to complete the vertical integration of the entire process. At this time, these play-ins and their content are wholly developed in-house by the Musissho Team, including the arranging and orchestration of public domain works, recording, mixing, and mastering of live tracks, and content delivery through streaming software. We have had people from all over the world join us previously, including United States, Canada, Spain, Italy, Singapore, Indonesia and others.

What is a Play-In?

Play-In is an event where many people get together and play the same piece at the same time. It is different from a regular group class in a sense that there is no teaching going on. The purpose of the play-in is so that people can have fun making music together on pieces they have previously learned while building endurance both physically and mentally by playing a lot. Music is a universal language for all regions of the world and for all ages. The play-in embraces our enjoying music together and enjoying music for life concept. 

How does this work?

The most frequently asked question is, "How can we possibly play together if we can't hear each other?" The participants are muted for the whole meeting unless they are submitting a song request, and they follow the leader. However, while the participants cannot hear each other, the act of doing something together at the same time in different regions of the world is something that can only be experienced virtually. This also takes anxiety off of some people if they feel self-conscious about their playing, which is very common with older players. We do not require anyone to turn on their video or talk during these meetings, and we welcome participants of all ages!
